Modern socializing often tries to manufacture the result without reproducing the conditions that created it.

“Come to this event and meet people!” 

But if you go to singles events, you'll meet people desperate to be in a relationship, that for sure you'll have in common. 

If you get hobbies with the intent to make connections, you'll be disappointed to learn connections take time and just showing up won't make things happen. 

But that's another conversation for the participation trophy generation. 

And to finish that thought, what would I have most in common with people who went to make friends events?

Making friends.
